Style Sports #2: Sarah Nurse
Style Sports: A brief history into a specific athlete and how I'd style them.
Sarah Nurse spent the last two seasons on the Toronto Sceptres and has been a clutch player for Team Canada since her debut on Team Canada at the Four Nations Cup in 2015.
Sarah Nurse recently signed a contract with PWHL Vancouver. Nurse said this about the news: “I am so honoured to be joining PWHL Vancouver, finally bringing professional women’s hockey to the West Coast!” said Nurse. “I already got a taste of the passion last year during the Takeover Tour and can’t wait to experience that daily. The vision for this organization could not be more exciting and I am so humbled by Cara’s confidence in me as a player and as a person. The love and support I’ve felt already has meant so much to me, puck drop can’t come soon enough!”
Off the ice, Sarah Nurse started Nursey Night, where she hosts Black Girls Hockey Club, where players are invited to Sceptres’ games. In addition, [she] also plan[s] on building off Nursey Night by adding additional programs and one special event this summer that will teach girls leadership skills beyond the ice. I want to pass along some of the lessons I’ve been able to learn along the way. I think this event will be huge for BIPOC athletes.” Hopefully, Nursey Night becomes a tradition in Vancouver. Nurse has spoken out about her personal experience being a Black woman in sport. She said, “Sport can help empower women and women of colour by teaching them how strong they are. With sport, you set goals and work to achieve them. You’re really relying on yourself to find inner strength and build up more skills along the way. Hockey can teach people life lessons about determination, leadership and teamwork—whether that’s on the ice or in the locker room. It’s always made me feel powerful because I’ve been able to show my skill.”
How I’d Style Sarah: As seen from above. Sarah’s style is very modern and feminine. She isn’t afraid of a pop of colour or pattern. Due to this, I chose a lipstick covered skirt because of her love of patterns, but also being Revlon’s newest ambassador. I chose a blouse that doesn’t take away from the patterned skirt, yet still compliments Sarah. The simple yet heart shaped purse is very Carrie Bradshaw. I felt compelled to include that Carrie Bradshaw because Sarah recently mentioned she purchased a purse similar to the SATC character.
Overall, Sarah is a crucial player when discussing women’s hockey and being an influential person off the ice. Her dedication to hockey and standing up against racism in a predominantly White sport is simply inspiring.
